Guggulsterone is a plant-based steroid found in the resin of Indian guggul trees (Commiphora mukul). A 2014 study involving rats found that treatment with guggulsterone inhibited the levels of inflammatory markers such as TNF-alpha and IL-6. The results further indicated that there was a significant decrease in joint swelling and pain after one month of treatment compared to the control group. This suggests that guggulsterone may be useful for managing symptoms associated with RA.

In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, guggulsterone may also help reduce cartilage damage caused by chronic joint inflammation associated with RA. A 2018 study published in BMC Complementary & Alternative Medicine found that treatment with guggul gum resin decreased markers of cartilage destruction such as hyaluronidase activity and collagenase activity compared to the control group. This suggests that long-term use of guggul gum resin may inhibit cartilage damage caused by RA while simultaneously providing relief from symptoms like pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Safety Considerations

Guggulerstone appears safe when taken at recommended dosages but due to its potential effect on hormones care should be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additionally, there are some reports of gastrointestinal upset after taking guggulerstone so it is important to start slowly at lower dosages if you plan on adding it into your regimen for treating RA or other inflammatory conditions.
